NTUC Welcome, formed in 1973, in an effort to counter profiteering from a world-wide rice shortage. NTUC Welcome supermarkets changed its name to NTUC Fairpice in 1983 led to an even larger chain of FairPrice outlets. The role has developed beyond price control to service concepts and niche marketing to meet changing consumer tastes.
