Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819. It joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but separated two years later and became independent. It subsequently became one of the world's most prosperous countries with strong international trading links (its port is the world's busiest in terms of tonnage handled) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe.

[edit] The Singapore Flyer

The Singapore Flyer was first conceived in 2000 and construction begins in 2005. The Singapore Flyer project was funded by two German banks, Delbrueck Bethmann Maffei and Bayerische Hypo-und Vereinsbank. With the injection of S$240 million, the largest single foreign investment in the Singaporean entertainment industry. Takenaka and Mitsubishi were the main contractors, and Arup was the structural engineer. Construction was completed in early 2008 with the observation wheel started rotating on 11 February 2008.

Located on the southeast tip of the Marina Centre reclaimed land, it offers broad views of the city centre and beyond to about 45 km (28 mi), including the Indonesian islands of Batam and Bintan, as well as Johor, Malaysia.
